Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 1: Common requirements (Adopted ISO 19085-1:2021, second edition, 2021-03, with North American deviations)

Standard Details

CSA Preface This is the second edition of CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 19085-1, Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 1: Common requirements, which is an adoption, with North American deviations, of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 19085-1 (second edition, 2021-03). It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2019 as CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 19085-1 (adopted ISO 19085-1:2017). It is one in a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as "CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 19085-1" throughout. This Standard covers the safety issues presented by newly emerging woodworking machines. The North American deviations are intended to meet product requirements and to align with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (Canada) and the National Electrical Code (United States). This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with other parts of the CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 19085 series of Standards, applicable to specific machine types. Note: When "Part 1" is mentioned in this Standard, it refers to CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 19085-1 (second edition). This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was reviewed for North American adoption by the CSA Subcommittee on Electrical Equipment for Woodworking Machinery, under the jurisdiction of the CSA Technical Committee on Industrial Products and the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. Scope This document gives the safety requirements and measures to reduce risks arising during operation, adjustment, maintenance, transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping, related to woodworking machines capable of continuous production use, hereinafter referred as "machines". These safety requirements and measures are those common to most of the machines, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer; reasonably foreseeable misuse has been considered too. The machines are designed to process solid wood and material with similar physical characteristics to wood, with hand feed or integrated feed. This document is intended to be used in conjunction with the other parts of the ISO 19085 series, applicable to specific machine types. The extent to which all significant hazards of a specific machine type are covered is indicated in the specific part of the ISO 19085 series relevant to that machine type. The hazards covered, at least partly, by the requirements of this document, are listed in Annex A. It is not applicable to machines intended for use in potential explosive atmospheres or to machines manufactured prior to the date of its publication. 1DV.1 Modify Clause 1 by adding the following to the first paragraph: This Standard applies to electrical woodworking machines rated 600 V or less that are intended to be installed and used in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) in the United States and the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1) in Canada. In Canada, general requirements applicable to these machines are provided in CSA C22.2 No. 0. 1DV.2 Modify Clause 1 by adding the following Note after the last paragraph: NOTE 1DV: Machines for capturing and extracting dust are not within the scope of this Standard.
