CSA O80 SERIES:21
Wood preservation
Standard Details
Preface This is the twelfth edition of the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails, Wood preservation . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2015, 2008, 1997, 1989, 1983, 1974, 1970, 1966, 1962, 1959, and 1954. This edition’s technical requirements are organized in the Use Category System (UCS). The UCS is designed to facilitate selection of the appropriate wood species, preservative, penetration, and retention (loading) by the specifier and user of treated wood by more accurately matching the species, preservative, penetration, and retention for typical moisture conditions and wood biodeterioration agents to the intended end use. This Series of StandardDetails consists of five StandardDetails, as follows: • CSA O80.0, General requirements for wood preservation, specifies requirements and provides information applicable to the entire Series of StandardDetails. • CSA O80.1, Specification of treated wood, is intended to help specifiers and users of treated wood products identify appropriate requirements for preservatives for various wood products and end use environments. • CSA O80.2, Processing and treatment, specifies minimum requirements and process limitations for treating wood products. • CSA O80.3, Preservative formulations, specifies requirements for preservatives not referenced elsewhere. The Technical Committee on Wood Preservation intends that CSA O80.3 will be used to accommodate additional preservative formulations (if any) in future editions of this Series of StandardDetails. • CSA O80.4 has been withdrawn. • CSA O80.5, CCA Additives — Utility Poles, specifies requirements for preparation and use of CCA preservative/additive combinations for utility poles permitted by CSA O80.1 and CSA O80.2. Users of this Series of StandardDetails should also note the following: • In 2012 PMRA registration requirements for Micronized Copper Azole (MCA) and Micronized Copper Quat (MCQ) were fulfilled and added to the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails • In 2013, requirements for alkaline copper quat, Type A (ACQ-A), were added to the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails. • The current edition of this Series of StandardDetails also includes requirements for the treatment of hardwood and softwood crossties and switchties with ACZA. • Minimum requirements for fire retardant treatments are specified in Clause 8.9 of CSA O80.1 and Clause 9.8 of CSA O80.2. The Technical Committee intends that Clause 8.9 of CSA O80.1 and Clause 9.8 of CSA O80.2 will be used to accommodate standardized fire retardant treatments (if any) in future editions of this Series of StandardDetails. • The process of including new preservatives to the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails have been included in CSA O80.0, Annex B. The Technical Committee wishes to thank the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) and its committee members for their assistance in developing CSA O80.1 and CSA O80.2 and adapting the UCS to Canadian needs. This Series of StandardDetails incorporates requirements from StandardDetails published by AWPA and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International), modified where necessary to suit Canadian conditions. AWPA StandardDetails are copyrighted by AWPA. Content from AWPA StandardDetails is reproduced in the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails with permission. To purchase AWPA StandardDetails, updates, and amendments, visit http://www.awpa.com. The Technical Committee’s practice of annually reviewing changes to AWPA StandardDetails has been discontinued. Revisions to AWPA Analytical (A), Evaluation (E), Hydrocarbon Solvent StandardDetails H (HS-) and Miscellaneous (M) StandardDetails, and to AWPA Conversion Factors and Correction Tables, will be incorporated into future editions of this Series of StandardDetails as a matter of course unless the Technical Committee decides otherwise. Revisions to AWPA U1 and T1 StandardDetails (formerly Commodity (C) StandardDetails) and to AWPA Preservative (P) StandardDetails will be considered for incorporation into future editions of this Series of StandardDetails only at the request of an interested party. The Technical Committee’s practice of annually reviewing changes to applicable ASTM StandardDetails continues. Revisions to applicable ASTM StandardDetails will be incorporated into future editions of this Series of StandardDetails when appropriate. This Series of StandardDetails specifies minimum requirements that will provide satisfactory service and appropriate protection for users. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of the Wood Preservation Canada. This Standard has been developed in compliance with StandardDetails Council of Canada requirements for National StandardDetails of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CSA O80.0:21 - General requirements for wood preservation Scope 1.1 The CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails specifies requirements related to the preservation and fire retardance of wood through chemical treatment (pressure and thermal impregnation). The subjects covered include materials and their analysis, pressure and thermal impregnation procedures, and fabrication and installation to put treated wood into service. 1.2 This Standard lists reference publications and provides definitions applicable to the entire CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails. This Standard also describes how the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails differs from related AWPA StandardDetails and addresses the need for preservative registration. Recommendations on the use of the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails and related AWPA StandardDetails can be found in Annex A. Note: In Canada, preservative registration is carried out through Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency. 1.3 The requirements and recommendations of the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails are based solely on the treatment efficacy of the chemicals in question. The CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails does not necessarily take all laws and regulations into account. Note: It is the responsibility of the users of the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails to ensure that their use of preservatives does not conflict with applicable laws and regulations. 1.4 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CSA O80.1:21 - Specification of treated wood Scope 1.1 This Standard is intended to help specifiers identify appropriate requirements for specific wood products and end use environments. Note: The existence of a particular requirement in this Standard does not imply that the permitted combination of preservatives, processes, and/or wood species will be recognized by a regulatory body. 1.2 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CSA O80.2:21 - Processing and treatment Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies minimum requirements for treatment of wood products covered by the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails, including conditioning for treatment, treatment processes and limitations, end results of treatment, post-treatment handling, and quality control. Treatment practices and results should comply with the CSA O80 Series of StandardDetails as a whole and, subject to Clause 4of CSA O80.0, the relevant AWPA StandardDetails. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
