Structural glued-laminated timber

Standard Details

Preface This is the fifth edition of CSA O122, Structural glued-laminated timber . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2016, 2006, 1989, and 1980. This Standard contains stress grades for Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, Spruce-Lodgepole Pine-Jack Pine, and Hem-Fir/Douglas Fir-Larch structural glued-laminated timber. This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with CSA O177, Qualification code for manufacturers of structural glued-laminated timber. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) addition of procedures to allow the block-gluing and re-gluing of glulam component members (both face and edge bonds) into larger glulam members; b) a technical review of the fire-performance layups for 1 h fire-rated glulam and the addition of a 2 h fire-rated layup. A new normative Annex C, "Specified layups for structural glued-laminated timber required to provide a fire-resistance rating", was added to provide clarity; c) addition of 24f-E and 24f-EX Hem-Fir stress grades and layups, and changes to the modulus of elasticity (MOE) requirements for 16c-E Hem-Fir layup; d) addition of 24f-E and 24f-EX stress grades and layups for Spruce-Lodgepole Pine-Jack Pine which incorporate the use of a "manufactured lamina"; e) addition of Grade P-24, a performance specified lamina which may be either a manufactured lamina or lumber (laminating stock) grade. Procedures for grade qualification, quality control, and testing have been added to this Standard; f) addition of Non-Structural and Structural Custom glulam stress grades for applications where the current glulam stress grades are not required, or an application requires a stress grade/layup which the current stress grades do not adequately support; g) addition of MOE requirements for Stress Grade 11c (now 11c-E) in order to develop design values for this stress grade; h) addressing the changes of the adhesive qualification requirements in CSA O177 and clarifying the role of the certification body in the approval process of adhesives which have been qualified to previous versions of CSA O112.9 and CSA O112.7 (withdrawn). CSA O177, Annex H (informative), provides the background information and rationale for decisions made by the subcommittee and the industry need for continued acceptance of adhesives qualified by these two standards; i) editorial changes to tables to provide better clarity; and j) addition of Annex D, which provides recommendations for the certification of products governed by this Standard and the qualification requirements for the organizations and laboratories responsible for the certification. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Glued-Laminated Timber, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Solid and Engineered Wood Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Construction and Civil Infrastructure, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard provides minimum requirements for the manufacture of glulam of those species specified in CSA O86. It also provides minimum requirements for the block-gluing and re-gluing of glulam components into larger finished glulam. 1.2 Storage, handling, and installation of products subsequent to manufacture are not covered by this Standard. 1.3 The design criteria for glulam manufactured in accordance with this Standard are covered in CSA O86. Requirements for the development of specified strengths and modulus of elasticity for glulam are provided in Annex B. 1.4 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.5 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. Note: For conversion into yard/pound (imperial) equivalents, see Annex A.
