Standard Specification for Installation of Rechargeable Lithium Batteries on Aircraft
1.1 Definition—This specification defines acceptable means and methods to validate the equipment, location, and installation of rechargeable lithium batteries and battery systems on aircraft, given special considerations for the particular characteristics inherent with the use of lithium technology. The material was developed through open consensus of international experts in general aviation.
1.2 Applicability—This specification was created by focusing on Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 Normal Category Airplanes; however, the content may be more broadly applicable and could be applied to other category aircraft pending approval of the civil aircraft authority for a given project. This specification is also intended to be independent of the battery size or usage, but rather to be applicable to any rechargeable lithium battery. This specification does not change or create any additional regulatory requirements, nor does it authorize changes in or permit deviations from existing regulatory requirements.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
