Preface This is the third edition of CSA C22.2 No. 218.1, Spas, hot tubs, cold tubs, and associated equipment. It supersedes the previous editions published in 2013 and 1989. It is one of a series of standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) improved marking requirements for field terminals; b) added requirements for heat pump and chiller systems; c) added markings and warnings with respect to hypothermia; and d) updated normative references. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Hydro-Massage Spas, Hot Tubs, and Associated Equipment, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Consumer and Commercial Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to spas, hot tubs, cold tubs, and associated equipment intended for residential and commercial use indoors or outdoors in nonhazardous locations, installed in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, and connected a) permanently to an electrical circuit of 250 V or less (i.e., a maximum of 150 volts-to-ground); or b) by a factory-provided supply cord, terminating in a moulded attachment plug, to an electrical supply rated at not more than 125 V single phase and not more than 15 A. Note: See Clause 4.2.8for requirements for plug- and cord-connected equipment. 1.2 Clauses 4 to 6 apply to spas, hot tubs, and cold tubs. Clauses 7 to 9 apply to associated equipment, as follows: a) Clause 7 — remote packaged units for use with spas, hot tubs, and cold tubs; b) Clause 8 — lighting equipment provided as an integral part of a spa, hot tub, and cold tub; and c) Clause 9 — electrolytic chlorine and bromine generators. 1.3 This Standard does not apply to a) hydromassage bathtubs (covered in CSA C22.2 No. 218.2); b) portable hydromassage units; c) heated bathtubs; d) hydrotherapy bathtubs or units; and e) swimming pool heaters. 1.4 General requirements applicable to this Standard are given in CSA C22.2 No. 0. 1.5 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
