Performance standard for rating water-chilling and heat pump water-heating packages

Standard Details

Preface This is the fourth edition of CSA C743, Performance standard for rating water-chilling and heat pump water-heating packages . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2009, 2002, and 1993. This Standard has been developed to harmonize with AHRI 551/591 (SI) and with AHRI 560 (I-P), but with modifications to convert to hard metric rating conditions and requirements. This Standard also references ANSI/ASHRAE 30 and ASHRAE 182 for test procedures. For minimum efficiency requirements, this Standard includes tables harmonized with ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 (including Addenda X and Y). The following are major changes to this edition: a) modification to the rating and test procedures to align with ANSI/AHRI 551/591 and ANSI/ASHRAE 30; b) modification to the ratings and test procedures to align with AHRI 560 and ANSI/ASHRAE 182; and c) modification to the minimum efficiency requirements defined by ASHRAE 90.1 with modifications as defined in Addenda X, Y, and CJ. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada, BC Hydro, Efficiency Manitoba, Hydro-Québec, Independent Electricity System Operator, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, FortisBC, and Québec’s Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Performance Standard for Rating Water-Chilling and Heat Pump Water-Heating Packages, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration and the Strategic Steering Committee on Performance, Energy Efficiency, and Renewables, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 Inclusions 1.1.1 Vapour compression water-chilling and water-heating packages This Standard applies to factory-designed and prefabricated vapour-compression water-chilling and water-heating packages that include one or more compressors as well as a) water-cooled, air-cooled, or evaporatively-cooled condensers; b) water-cooled heat recovery condensers; c) air-to-water heat pumps; and d) water-to-water heat pumps with a capacity greater or equal to 40 kW. 1.1.2 Water-cooled water-chilling absorption packages This Standard also applies to absorption water-cooled water-chilling packages using lithium bromide refrigerant and including a) water-cooled single-effect steam; b) water-cooled double-effect steam; c) hot water-operated water-chilling units; d) water-cooled, hot water-operated double-effect water-chilling units; and e) double-effect, direct-fired (natural gas, oil, LP gas) water-chilling/heating units. 1.2 Exclusions 1.2.1 Vapour-compression water-chilling and heating packages The following products are not covered by this Standard: a) water-to-water heat pumps with a capacity less than 40 kW; b) air-to-water units designed exclusively to heat potable water; and c) adiabatically cooled chiller products. Notes: 1) Products that fall under Item a) are covered by AHRI 600-2. 2) Products that fall under Item b) are covered by CSA C745. 1.2.2 Water-cooled absorption chilling packages This Standard does not include water-cooled absorption chilling packages that meet one of the following criteria: a) absorption chiller/heater units with air-cooled condenser; b) applications employing heat pumping or exhaust gas firing; or c) absorption chillers not using lithium bromide. 1.3 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
