Nonmetallic sheathed cable

Standard Details

Preface This is the tenth edition of CSA C22.2 No. 48, Nonmetallic sheathed cable , one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. It supersedes the previous editions published in 2015, 2009, 1990, 1984, 1976, 1965, 1957, 1951, and 1938. This Standard specifies requirements for nonmetallic sheathed cables intended for use on systems having a nominal voltage of 300 V and less. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) updating the scope of this Standard to clarify that it applies to nonmetallic sheathed cable Types NMD90 and NMWU; b) adding requirements for PCS cables in this Standard; c) removing Clause 8 to maintain compliance with the CE Code, Part I, since Section 82 has been deleted in the 2021 edition of the CE Code; d) updating Clause 6.1 to allow an optional low temperature marking for cables having two, three, or four twisted conductors; e) adding new Clauses 7.1.1.3 and 7.1.1.4 for dc resistance testing; f) updating Clause 7.2.1.3 to remove smoothing and die-cutting after exposure to accelerated aging; g) updating Clause 7.2.2.3 to specify the test method in CSA C22.2 No. 2556 instead of CSA C22.2 No. 0.3; h) updating Clause 7.4.1.2 to remove smoothing and die-cutting after exposure to accelerated aging and to specify die-cut samples; i) updating Clause 7.5.7.2 to refer to the correct test method name; j) updating the titles of Clauses 7.3.3, 7.5.8, 7.5.9, and 7.5.10 to clarify that these are production tests; k) updating the requirements in Clause 7.5.9; l) updating Clause 7.5.14.2 to correct an error in the unit of measurement; m) updating Table 1 to correct the title of the tensile strength and elongation test and the reference to Clause 7.5.5; n) adding a note on nominal thickness in Tables 6 and 10; o) adding 16 and 18 AWG conductor sizes in Table 7; p) updating the requirements for elongation after accelerated aging in Table 13; q) updating the requirements for elongation and tensile strength for the air oven test in Table 16; and r) adding Annex A (informative). This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Fixed Installation Wires and Cables, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Wiring Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 General This Standard applies to nonmetallic sheathed cable Types NMD90 and NMWU intended for use on systems having a nominal voltage of 300 V and less, in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. Note: For the purposes of this Standard, the terms "nonmetallic sheathed" and "jacketed" are used interchangeably. 1.2 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
