Load-based and climate-specific testing and rating procedures for seasonal performance of heat recovery and energy recovery ventilators (HRVs and ERVs)

Standard Details

Preface This is the first edition of CSA SPE-18, Load-based and climate-specific testing and rating procedures for seasonal performance of heat recovery and energy recovery ventilators (HRVs and ERVs). This Document is not a consensus product; that is, it is not a Standard and it has not been formally reviewed or approved by a CSA Technical Committee. CSA acknowledges that the development of this Document was made possible, in part, by the financial support of BC Hydro, Efficiency Manitoba, Hydro-Québec, Electricity Canada, Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), NEEA, Fortis BC Gas, Ministere de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les Changements Climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP). This Document is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Document. This Document was prepared and reviewed by the Development Committee on Load-Based and Climate-Specific Testing and Rating Procedures for Seasonal Performance of Heat Recovery and Energy Recovery Ventilators (HRVs and ERVs). Scope 1.1 Applicability This Document specifies laboratory methods of test and procedures for rating the energy recovery effectiveness and apparent effectiveness and seasonal heat-recovery efficiency of heat recovery and energy recovery ventilators (HRVs and ERVs). Procedures for determining airflow rates and the leakage of air from one airstream to another are also included. This Document applies to packaged HRVs/ERVs that consist of factory-assembled elements, including fans or blowers, in which heat or heat and moisture are transferred between two isolated airstreams. Packaged HRVs/ERVs that use a refrigeration cycle or circulating fluid, such as a heat pipe, to transfer heat between two isolated airstreams may be rated using this Document. This Document may be applied to units that are considered "residential" or "commercial", or that are not specifically designated for either. 1.2 Exclusions This Document does not cover packaged HRVs/ERVs that contain supplemental heating (except as intended for frost control), fuel-fired heating, active cooling, humidification, or dehumidification components or capabilities. Note: Any optional components or features that are included with a product during a test are to be detailed in the rating report. 1.3 Terminology In this Document, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Document; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Document. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.4 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Document. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
