Large-scale fire test (LSFT) procedure
Preface This is the first edition of CSA TS-800, Large-scale fire test (LSFT) procedure. This Document is not a consensus product; that is, it is not a Standard and it has not been formally reviewed or approved by a CSA Technical Committee. This Document has been developed as a standardized test procedure for the testing of battery energy storage systems (BESS) that are intended for installation in residential, commercial, industrial, and utility applications. This Document was prepared by the Task Group on Thermal and Fire Test. Scope 1.1 General This Document provides a standardized test procedure to observe the effects of a fire event from a fully involved BESS on possible surrounding BESS units, external exposures, and anything else within the effective range. The test report output from this procedure documents initiation methodology, testing conditions and setup, and observations made during and after the test. This Document covers testing of BESS that are intended for installation in residential, commercial, industrial, and utility applications. Although this Document was drafted with specific chemistries in consideration, such as lithium-ion, the test procedure may be used for any chemistry as required by AHJs and other interested parties. 1.2 Terminology In this Document, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Document; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of this Document. 1.3 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Document. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
