Energy performance of drinking water coolers

Standard Details

Preface This is the second edition of CSA C815, Energy performance of drinking water coolers. It supersedes the first edition, published in 1999. This Standard has been updated to take into consideration the technological advances and changes in testing and evaluating the energy performance of drinking water coolers. This edition references the latest edition of ASHRAE 18 which includes the rating information that was lost when ARI 1010 was withdrawn. The Subcommittee on Energy Performance of Drinking Water Coolers was directed to develop an enhanced CSA performance standard and harmonize the requirements with the latest US EPA ENERGY STAR® criteria and ASHRAE 18 test procedures. This Standard includes the use of standby losses, updates testing procedures, and specifies the maximum standby losses for bottle-type drinking water coolers and maximum energy consumption rates for bottled and pressurized or thermoelectric types of water supply. CSA acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), BC Hydro, Manitoba Hydro, the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA). This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Energy Performance of Drinking Water Coolers, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Residential Equipment and the Strategic Steering Committee on Performance, Energy Efficiency, and Renewables, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies energy performance requirements for self- contained drinking water coolers having an hourly rated capacity of up to 21 mL/s (20 US gal/h). Included are: (a) procedures for measuring capacity and energy consumption, including standby losses; and (b) maximum energy consumption levels. 1.2 This Standard applies to the following mechanical, thermoelectric, and other electrically operated drinking water coolers that are designed to cool water for delivery to either locally or remotely installed dispensing means: (a) pressurized type; (b) point-of-use (POU) type; (c) remote type; and (d) bottle type. This Standard also applies to units that provide additional utility by means of a refrigerated compartment or a means of heating potable water, or both. 1.3 This Standard does not apply to drinking water coolers (a) intended for use on central circulating-type systems; or (b) employing remote-type (split-system) condensing units. 1.4 In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and "can" is used to express possibility or capability. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.5 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
